Which of Princess Diana’s Favorite Tiaras did Kate Middleton Wear to a Glittering Palace Reception?
We’ve only seen Kate Middleton wear a tiara four times, so it’s still a novelty to have the Duchess of Cambridge snapped with a diamond-encrusted headpiece perched on her brunette locks—especially when the tiara in question happens to be one of the late Princess Diana’s favorites.
Kate was pictured being driven to a white-tie reception at Buckingham Palace, wearing the famous Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, which was a wedding present to the Princess of Wales from her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1981. The tiara was originally commissioned by Queen Mary in 1914.
The elegant tiara, featuring 19 pearls hanging from a series of diamond-encrusted arches each topped with a lover’s knot design, was one that Diana was frequently pictured in during her lifetime. Although the Spencer family tiara was also strongly associated with Diana—she wore it at her wedding to Prince Charles—the Cambridge Lover’s Knot piece became something of a signature tiara for her.

Diana wore the tiara to balls and receptions in the U.S., New Zealand, Hong Kong, Italy and Saudi Arabia, as well as glittering events at home in Britain.
As Prince William gave Kate the diamond-and-sapphire engagement ring that had been his mother’s, it was thought that Kate might wear the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara at her wedding, but she instead opted for the more subtle but equally intricate Cartier Halo Scroll tiara for the Westminster Abbey ceremony in 2011.
This is the third tiara we’ve seen Kate wear—she has twice worn the queen’s Lotus Flower tiara to functions in the past two years, most recently with a sequined red dress to a state banquet held in honor of the Chinese president.
She paired the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara with an ice-blue lace Alexander McQueen dress for the annual Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace last night, at which more than 1,500 people were in attendance.
Find out more about why tiaras are so important to the royal family here, and why such symbolism and controversy are associated with Diana’s tiaras in particular.
